Social-Emotional Learning in the School Setting

For this service-learning designated internship course, the Department of Psychology at Texas State University has partnered with Austin Discovery School. Interns gain hands-on experience providing social-emotional learning support to elementary and middle school students.

Austin Discovery School, a K-8 public charter school in east Austin, has a strong emphasis on Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Their unique program has dedicated SEL staff and a dedicated SEL space, called "Restore." Interns work with SEL staff to support students throughout the day in their social-emotional needs.

Internships Available

  • 8 Internship positions are available each long semester
  • PSY 4396 Internship in Psychology: Social-Emotional Learning in the School Setting (Mayberry)


  • Austin Discovery School in east Austin (FM 969 near Decker Lane)


  • Minimum 3.0 GPA overall
  • Interest in working with K-8 students
  • Developmental Psychology (preferred, but not required)

Internship Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Complete 120-hour on-site internship during the semester (usually works out to about 9 hours per week)
  • Weekly meeting with the SEL team and discussion assignments
  • Applicants must be responsible - students must treat their placement like a staff position, be timely and reliable
  • Applicants must attend all scheduled class meetings (1 class meeting per month)
  • Applicants must be able to pass a background check
  • Applicants must bring a Degree Audit to the interview

Prior to the interview, please make sure that there is room in your schedule for the internship. Recommended: no more than 12 hours of other coursework, and no more than 20 hours of work. The internship should be a priority for the semester.
