Sports Psychology examines the relationships between psychological concepts and theories and individual's thoughts toward health and exercise. Eventually we plan to pursue a certificate (for non-degree seeking individuals) in addition to this minor (for degree seeking students). The minor will focus on topics such as methods of training and coaching, teamwork and leadership, motivation and stress, and social issues in sport. Current theoretical perspectives of personality factors in exercise, why people exercise, exercise adherence, mental skills and the psychological effects of exercise will be investigated.

Students will study the relationships between brain biology and behavior. Students will learn to apply psychological theories and perspectives toward understanding thoughts about exercise, an individual's willingness to exercise, choice of exercise, and to assess the relationships between physical health and mental health.

Students wishing to pursue this minor need to complete a minor declaration form in the Psychology Department Office. Download the Brochure.

The Minor requires 4 Psychology courses, 2 PE courses, and 1 additional elective from the groups listed to the right (total of 21 credit hours). PSY 1300 or the equivalent is a prerequisite for all of the psychology courses in this minor.

Notes for Forensic Psychology minors

  1. Psychology majors or ESS majors pursuing the Sports Psychology minor cannot double count courses toward their major and the minor.

  2. Enrollment in the required Psychology courses assumes that non-psychology majors will have completed the PSY1300 introduction course as part of their social science core curriculum component. If the Psychology 1300 course is not taken as part of the social science component, PSY 1300 is a prerequisite for PSY 4390, 3331, 3350 & 3361.
